About
Toby Chapman-Smith
Masters of Architecture (Hons)
Certificate in Carpentry.
Hi I’m Toby.
I graduated with a Masters of Architecture in 2012 with Honours and Distinction in Architectural design. I wasn’t ready for the office life so I jumped into a carpentry apprenticeship in 2013 to pursue my love for making things and expand my practical knowledge. I worked under some very talented builders and was delighted to take out the Northern Apprentice of the year 2016. I continued my career in construction as a site Forman building architectural homes in Auckland and Northland.
A peak educational experience for me was designing and building my own home. It was a hugely formative experience in costing, designing, detailing and building. It also gave me an opportunity to extend my knowledge and experience in the specialised area of insitu concrete; a particular passion of mine. Our home ‘Black Ridge House’ went on to win HOME magazine ‘Rural Home of the Year 2022’ which was a real honour!
Following this award I have steered my business back into the design world. I’m really enjoying working in this area and excited to provide a service that is backed with both architectural and construction knowledge. I work on a large variety of projects in both residential and commercial design.
I would love to work with you on your next building project.
